Babychan

Powell served as both architect and interior designer for Babychan, a Japanese-inspired restaurant located within Nashville’s transformative Neuhoff development. Drawing inspiration from 1970s Japanese design, the project pairs warm wood millwork, rich textures, and indigo tile accents to create a space that feels both nostalgic and contemporary. Working closely with owner Leina Horii, the design weaves personal memories of Japan throughout the restaurant, creating an authentic and deeply layered guest experience rooted in family, culture, and storytelling.

The interior balances industrial influences with rich materiality, incorporating hanging rattan lamps, intricate wood paneling, custom millwork, and thoughtfully curated furnishings that evoke the warmth and character of neighborhood restaurants in Japan. Personal touches can be found throughout the space, including beverages served in vintage glassware collected by Horii’s grandmother during the 1960s and ’70s. Every element was carefully considered to support the guest experience, from the flow of the dining room to the intimate moments within the space. Powell creates restaurants that connect brand, culture, and place—delivering memorable dining experiences that resonate with guests long after their visit.
